JAKARTA – Chairman of the Commission 1 Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), Agustin Teras Narang, invited all parties to formulate a Draft Law (RUU) Governing Personal Data. The request was not without reason.
The reason, one of the shopping applications online or in the network (online), has just been reported to have been hacked. So that it is estimated tens of millions of shopping application customer data, allegedly sold freely in the information buying and selling market. This certainly has the potential to interfere with the personal interests of users of the application.
“As a member of the DPD RI, I invite all parties to formulate a representative Bill on Personal Data Protection in accordance with the needs of the present age. So that the data and privacy of every person, are truly protected in accordance with the mandate of the constitution,” Teras Narang told inikalteng.com, Wednesday ( 5/6/2020).
The former Governor of Central Borneo said, starting the first week of May 2020, on Monday (05/04/2020), his party had held a discussion regarding the protection of personal data.
It was stated, based on data from the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), as quoted by KataData in February 2020, there were five sectors that many consumers complained about related to personal data. These include banking, online or fintech loans, housing, online shopping applications and leasing.
“The issue of personal data protection becomes very important in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, where in this era it is very dependent on data. Because personal data is a commodity that can become an economic force if managed properly by the state. Conversely, it can become a weakness when the state is unable to protect it. Because, in the hundreds of millions of data in our society, there is a socioeconomic potential to security and defense that needs to be examined,” explained Teras through its release.
According to Teras, the protection of personal data demands action for the benefit of the people and the country at the same time. The nation must do everything in its power to protect and manage it for the benefit of the people and the nation. People’s data should not be allowed to become a trading object, let alone a cross-country economic scam.
Teras revealed, hundreds of countries already have a Personal Data Protection Act. Therefore, it is time for Indonesia to have the same law, to protect the personal interests and the economy of the region and the country.
He added, Committee 1 DPD RI deemed it necessary to prepare a position in legal standing which was immediately conveyed to the Chairman of the DPD RI. It is hoped that as a state institution, the DPD RI will be able to provide an objective and constructive perspective in its capacity as regional representatives who are trusted directly by the people throughout Indonesia.
